UMUAHIA—- NO fewer than 2,597 staff in the 17 local governments of Abia State have been promoted by the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) in the past one year. Chairman of the commission, Chief Paul Mba told newsmen on Tuesday that of the number, 917 were senior staff while 1,680 were junior staff. He also explained that 215 staff of the unified local government system are enjoying the sponsorship of the commission in various institutions of higher learning, adding that N15 million has been paid to the beneficiaries, while another N55 million has been spent on in-service training and workshops for all cadres of staff.
According to the chairman, two Heads of Service (HOS) were suspended for 90 days for engaging in acts inimical to the smooth running of the system, while two others were compulsorily retired for falsifying their ages. He also said that the commission intends to reshuffle the H.O.S to inject more life into the system.
His words: “The problem is that the local government chairmen are not conversant with the system and that is why we are laying so much emphasis on sanitizing the system to remove the timidity among the officials. We have discovered that one of the things that lower the image of the local government system is the habit whereby once the monthly allocations are shared, many workers stop coming to work and we are determined to change that attitude.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the commission in ensuring stability at the local government level and urged the staff to continue to work hard in the interest of the people at the grass root.
He thanked the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for its understanding especially during the period of non-payment of salaries in the state adding that NULGE’S attitude has helped to create industrial peace and harmony in the 17 local government areas of the state.
