FG probes police, Air forcemen clashthomas uyenseTHE Federal Government on Tuesday inaugurated the Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances that led to the last week�s clash in Lagos between men of the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police. Inaugurating the board in Lagos, Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Roland Oritsejafor, noted that the present administration under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo, placed high premium on peaceful co-existence amongst all Nigerians in all parts of the country and the unity of the nation. He said the incident of the clash between the two forces in Lagos, had put a dent on the image of, not only the esteemed security organisations, but also that of the country as a whole. The minister urged the men in uniform to continue to carry out their constitutional duties with all dedication and sense of responsibility, ensuring that they did not engage in any activities that would made the people loose confidence in the Armed Forces and their capabilities. The board was asked to among others, determine the remote and immediate causes of the confrontation and incident, to apportion blame where necessary, and to make recommendations on how to avert a re-occurrence. In his response the chairman of the board, Mr. Dauda Gualadi, commended the Federal Government for its quick interventions in the ugly trend and promised that the board would work assiduously to get to the roof of the confrontation. The board will commence work immediately and is expected to submit its report on or before Monday July 19, 2004. Wednesday, July 14, 2004 |
