Obasanjo orders recovery, transfer of N765m, $1m to FAAN accountSOLA ADEKOLA, TONY OTARUPRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo has ordered that N675 million of pension funds and $1,003,700 in a domiciliary account with a new generation bank in Lagos be recovered and credited to the account of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). Aviation Minister, Malam Isa Yuguda, who disclosed this in Abuja, said the directive was already being implemented to facilitate efforts to reposition FAAN, adding that report of the panel set up to audit the authoritys accounts revealed it operated 12 accounts as against the approved three by government. The authoritys accounting according to the report, also failed to obtain ministerial approvals for all the bank loans they took amounted to N1.33 billion as at last September 30, the minister said. Yuguda noted that the ministry had to appoint a firm of chartered accountants to reconcile FAAN accounts following reports that the authority was not getting the best from all its banks as their charges were said to be too high. Speaking on the directors that were on compulsory leave, Yuguda said those found guilty would be prosecuted after being tried by the necessary legal framework. He stressed that the determination of the federal government to boost economic and tourist activities in the country has made the government to ask states to build their own airport noting that only Adamawa, Ebonyi, Bauchi, Cross River, Imo, Gombe and Osun have so far responded. Yuguda who said that his ministry has performed well in the past one year by repositioning of the Aviation industry devoid of corruption and favouritism promised that the ministry would strive to build the aviation industry to an enviable standard that would make the country proud. Earlier, the Minister of Information and National Orientation Chief Chukwuemeka Chikelu (SAN) had said the aviation industry was now shifting from the public sector driven to the private sector led economy. Represented by a director in the ministry, Dr. C.N. Agbonle, Chikelu said government was ready to give all necessary assistant to the ministry to reposition it so that enough Jobs could be created for our teeming youths. The media press briefing drew a lot of participants from government and the private sector. Wednesday, July 14, 2004 |
