Nigeria yet to comply with ICPDJAMES SOWOLE, akureA Federal Commissioner in the National Popula tion Commission Dr. Bode Iwaloye, on Tuesday, lamented that 10 years after the adoption of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPC), Nigeria was yet to fully utilise and comply with the contents of the document. Iwaloye spoke in Akure, Ondo State, while delivering a paper on the occasion marking the World Population Day. According to the commissioner, the document remained the basis for assessing whether Nigeria had taken any serious stride towards sustained growth and sustainable economic development. He however noted that though the country has been implementing certain aspects of the programmes of action, that had not been properly co-ordinated within the national frame. The commissioner said it was in realisation of this that the Federal Government recently decided to saddle the National Population Commission with the responsibility of co-ordinating and monitoring all population-related activities in the country and to prepare new National Population Policy (NPP) along ICPD line. Iwaloye said the government decision was in the right direction, as it remained the only way to pursue reasonable achievements in the country in the area of population, sustained economic growth and development. Speaking on the occasion, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, said the present administration fully subscribed to the objectives of the NPP as its goals were complementary to that of the ICPD. Agagu said this was why deliberate steps were being taken to improve the states health care delivery system through provision of infrastructure, adequate manpower, availability of drugs, festival of surgery among others. He promised that the administration would continue to ensure policies and programmes that would ensure abundant food supply, good education and health. The governor also said that efforts would also be made through relevant departments to sensitise and promote awareness among the public about the problems associated with large families and the need to embrace family planning. He implored the people of the state, non-governmental organisations as well as local governments to assist the national population commission to attain the objectives of the 2005 census. Agagu also urged the people to imbibe the culture of registering births and deaths at relevant centres in the communities.
