USAID gives N6.25bn to Nigeria:To support reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, othersjames sowole, akureTHE United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has given $460 million (about N6.25 billion) to Nigeria to support reproductive health, child health care and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS in the next four years. Speaking on the occasion to mark the World Population Day in Abuja, on Tuesday, USAID General Development Officer, Ms Lynn Gorton, pointed out that the amount would boost the quality of lives of individuals and families, who constituted the worlds population. She noted that the theme of this years celebration titled: International Conference on Population Development (ICPD) + 10 is very significant in the sense that it provided every country the opportunity to take stock of major accomplishments and challenges in the areas of population and development over the last 10 years. A nations population is its greatest asset. The quality of this asset depends on the quality of the lives that constitute it, therefore, a nations development is a function of its well-being. Economic and political stability as ell as education and health are critical elements for families, communities and nations, she said, adding that Nigeria had joined several other countries in affirming that sustainable development depended on fostering the full capacity of all citizen, women, men and youth to reach their full potential. She said the USAID/Nigerias development programme addressed the poor health status through an integrated programme of maternal and child health, reproductive health and family planning, basic education and HIV/AIDS interventions. The effects of this intervention, according to her, yielded meaningfull result such as increasing access to reproductive health information and services, prevention of unintended pregnancies, increasing HIV/AIDS prevention, cure and support services and meeting the reproductive health needs of Nigeria youths through sexuality education and health education.
