Army committed to democracy survival Agwaihammed salawu, josChief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.- General Martin Luther Agwai, on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, reiterated the commitment of the army to survival of democracy in the country. Agwai stressed that the armys vision was to ensure a highly-trained army that was capable of instilling fear into the enemy, admired by allies and respected by Nigerians. In his opening address at the second commanding officers workshop at the Maxwell Khobe Canton-ment, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, Agwai expressed the belief that the vision could be attained through a rigorous regime of high standard of professionalism and pursuit of excellence at all times. Speaking on the theme: Repositioning the commanding officers for effective unit command in the new millennium, the chief noted that the workshop was deliberately designed as a hatchery of concepts and ideas, sound enough to equip officers to meet the inevitable challenges that the army must contend with on its path to greater heights. As commanding officers, you are the bedrock of discipline due to your closeness to the troops and to command the respect of both superiors and subordinates alike, always ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in all your dealings, he said. Stressing the need for training and retraining, especially in the area of information technology (IT), Agwai insisted that emerging trend in security brought about by globalisation was to strive to be relevant in IT for optimal performance of army worldwide.
