Judicial commission member calls for increase in royal fathers financial allocationjames sowole, akureFOR traditional rulers to play their role effectively as custodians of peoples culture, a member of the Federal judicial Service Commission, prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN) has called for an increment in their allocation from the present five per cent to 10 per cent of local government allocation. The senior advocate made the call on Tuesday, at Oke-Agbe while speaking during a quarterly meeting of the conference of obas in Akoko area of Ondo State. According to Kayode, the five per cent of local government allocation being given to traditional rulers was not enough considering their roles in the society. Kayode stated that though traditional rulers roles were not entrenched in the constitution, their laudable roles as custodians of tradition could not be over-emphasised. He said traditional rulers being closer to the people could be useful in sensitising their subjects if given adequate information and funding. Traditional rulers, Kayode added, could also play a vital role in reducing incessant crisis and help to forestall violence between and within communities. The five per cent being given is not enough compared to their traditional roles which are enormous. Honestly, if I have my way, I would increase it to 10 per cent in order for them to be able to discharge their responsibilities appropriately, he stated. He posited that many countries of the world that have enjoyed traditional rulership in the past, have continued to maintain the institution as an anchor for their peculiar identity enhancement of cultural foundation as well as social stability and development. For unity of purpose, Kayode urged royal fathers in Akokoland to shelve their personal and individualistic interest to take care of their people. He also urged the rulers to encourage the people of the area to work together for Akokoland rather than engaging in partisan politics.
