Joint Police, Military Team Rout Robbers
From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu
The special anti-robbery team comprising police and military personnel put together to combat rising wave of robbery incidents in Enugu State has arrested 11 suspected armed robbers and seized a large cache of arms and ammunition in the last two weeks.
Enugu State Police Commissioner, Mr. Morrison B. Abe announced the success recorded by the team yesterday while parading arrested armed robbers before newsmen. He said the special operation covered all parts of the state.
He explained that the "massive operation" became necessary due to the upsurge in armed robbery incidents across Enugu State despite its relative low crime rate.
The operation, which according to him, lasted between June 25 and July 11, involving the various police bdivisions and area commands in the state led to the recovery of 23 arms of various types and 52 rounds of ammunition both modern and local made.
Among the recovered arms were sub machine guns, bberretta pistol and other service arms, which the police commissioner said were acquired by the robbers through dubious means.
Out of the 11 arrested robbers only six, including three teenagers, were paraded but Abe explained that bthe remaining ones were either at the State CID or in the hospital receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the encounter with the police.
He said a number of suspected robbers, who engaged the police in a gun duel, were killed in the course of the operations. He added that their deaths "are good riddance to the society."
The police commissioner attributed the success of the operations to the logistics and incentives provided by the state government in its efforts to rid the state of armed robbery and related crimes.
He also acknowledged the input of the members of the public in the operations. "The operations were largely successful due to the cooperation of members of the public, who provided useful information," he said.
Abe stated that the anti-robbery operations were a continuous exercise and vowed that the police were determined to put the hoodlums out of circulation so that law-abiding citizens could sleep with their two eyes closed.
