US Supports Nigeria's NEEDS Programme
From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja

United States has expressed support for the economic reform programmes of Federal Government as contained in the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) document.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. John Campbell and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Nigeria Mission Director, Mr. Dawn Liberi pledged US support yesterday in Abuja when they handed over 4,650 copies of NEEDS document to the Economic Adviser to the President of Nigeria and the Chief Executive of the National Planning Commission, Professor Ode Ojowu.

While USAID was not involved directly in the drafting of the document, it provided support through review of the draft document, synthesis of inputs from stakeholders who participated in six zonal workshops, editing of the final document and printing and shipping of the final document. A 35-person committee drafted the document with representation from government, civil society, youth and the private sector in the six geo-political zones of the country.

Describing NEEDS as an impressive initiative, Campbell said Nigeria is now well positioned to realise her economic dreams and aspirations.

The economic adviser, who expressed pleasure at US interest in Nigeria's economic growth, added that the document represents evidence of what is possible if people collaborate together.

Ojowu noted that the NEEDS document is a domestic expression of the New Economic Partnership in African Development (NEPAD), adding that the publication of so many copies has marked the turning point in the programme.

The Permanent Secretary, National Planning Commission, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, expressed gratitude to US for producing the documents, which he said, would help pass the message round especially to those who want to make inputs.
