Man Jailed for Hawking in Speaker's Office From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja A middle aged civil servant, Narman Batume, has been jailed by an Abuja Magistrate Court for hawking in the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari. Magistrate Adiza Honid sentenced the accused to a month in prison with N1,000 option of fine after he pleaded guilty to a charge of disobedience of lawful order contrary to section 152(1) of the Penal Code. According to a statement by the Special Assistant to the Speaker on Media, Mr. Leon Usigbe, the accused was arrested in June by the Speaker's Aide-de-Camp, Superintendent Ibrahim Bakori, for "an unauthorised entry into the office of the number four citizen." Batume was alleged to have entered the office with a bag of local brew (tiniasi tea), which he explained he wanted to advertise with the aim of eliciting their patronage. The action runs contrary to unnamed regulations, which authorities claimed bans advertisement of products of any kind within the National Assembly premises. With the claim, the accused having hawked within the premises the prosecution hinged its case on this to convince the court that its regulations had been violated for which he should be jailed.
