FG to Spend N20bn on Varsities -Minister From Jide Orintunsin in Minna In an effort at reposition the tertiary institutions, Federal Government-owned uiniversities are to gulp about N20 billion this year, Minister of Education, Professor Fibian Osuji, has disclosed. Speaking with newsmen at the end of his two-day working tour of educational institutions in Niger State at the headquarter of the National Examinations Councils (NECO), Minna, the minister said the sector is being adequately funded now. He noted that government was conscious of the fast that a national development is limited by the level of its education, hence adequate funds are being provided for the tertiary sectors of the industry. On the allegation that the nation's ivory towers are not adequately funded, Osuji said "Federal Government is putting out close to N20 billion to the universities this year. You cannot say that is not much. It is quite a lot of money." The minister also cautioned heads of parastatals under his ministry again over-bloating their budget estimates stressing that over the years, most estimates have been found to be out of place. " Most estiamte submitted for approval by some parastastals were oftern over bloated, he said, adding that in some cases most of the estimates are not realistic. He further said the development has forced government in most cases to give what it cn afford as most estimates are too bogus. The minister then advised heads of parastatals in his ministry to ensure that only realistic estimates are presented.
