FG to Send Relief to Sudan From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja In response to appeals by the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Abdel Rahim Khalil, Federal Government has concluded plans to airlift and distribute relief materials worth N14 million to refugees in Darfur, Sudan. Described as the worst humanitarian crisis requiring urgent attention of the international community, an estimated 10,000 people have been killed while another 1 million people are displaced in Darfur. In a statement signed on behalf of the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), by its Press Secretary, Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye, stated that the distribution of the relief materials from Nigeria would be handled by its officials who are expected to leave for Darfur tomorrow. The items include 2000 pieces each of blankets and towels, 600 bags of rice, 1000 cartons of premixed beverages, 500 bags of salt, 300 bags of flour and 300 kegs of vegetable oil. Federal Government, the statement added, is sending the relief materials in the spirit of African brotherliness as it did to others countries in South Africa via Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe to alleviate the drought problem, which ravaged that area in 2000. Also, the countries of Niger, Mali, Algeria, Ethiopia and the Republic of Congo have benefited from the Nigerian government humanitarian gesture at one time or the other.
