Insecurity Worries Army Chief From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Martin Luther Agwai, has deplored emerging security problems in the country, saying states once believed to be peace havens were fast turning into volatile areas. Agwai affirmed that the development was putting a strain on the armed forces because men and officers have to be ready to "combat the ever increasingly complex situation in the country." The COAS stated that the opening of the second commanding officers' workshop holding at the 3 Armoured Division, Maxwell Khobe Barracks, Rukuba, near Jos. In his words: "Areas that were once believed to be peace havens are becoming volatile with different security problems rearing their heads on daily basis, as depicted by events in Plateau and Yobe States to mention just a few. The enormous implications of this phenomenon in terms of loss of lives, properties and developmental activities have been clearly enumerated earlier." Agwai charged the commanding officers to be a bedrock of discipline because of their direct contact to the troops. "Your strategic roles both in peace and war times are of great interest to the NA in particular and the nation in general. You must continuously train and retrain in order to achieve a high and commendable level of professionalism and proficiency in your tasks," he said. He noted that the challenges of the ever-changing military environment brought about by globalisation though enormous were not insurmountable. "To do this, you must be aware of your surrounding and always strive to be informed. General Officer Comman-ding 3 Armoured Division, Major Gen. Danmadami Dyaji, had earlier in a speech stated that the workshop was geared towards fulfilling part of the vision and priorities of the army chief.
