Patrol Team Swoops on Illegal Arms Depot in Rivers

Rivers state joint police-military patrol team yesterday swooped on illegal arms dealers at Amadi-Ama a suburb of Port Harcout, River State recovering large cache of arms and sacks of live ammunition after an intensive exchange of gunfires.

Several people including a 14 year old female student of Ovum Grammar Schol, Warri, Delta State were reportdedly killed in the gun duel between the joint patrol team and the illegal arms operators in the neighbourhood in a raid that lasted for several hours.

The team was said to have stormed the area following a tipoff of the existence of illegal in the community but the patrol team was resisted by those on guard of the arms depot which resulted in the exchange of gun shots.

Sources said the jont patrol team arrived Amadi-Ama which has gone into record as a hotbed of militia attacks in the state at about yesterday morning in search and arrest of those in possession of illegal arms in the area.

THISDAY gatherd that residents of Amadi-Ama were disturbed and threatened by sporadic gun shots throughout the night which people had thought of being another cult invasion.

In the morning, according to sources, the residents of the community were prevented from leaving their houses as the patrol team had completely laid siege on the community with helicopters hovering over the area.

THISDAY learnt that the residents were ordered to lie down as the patrol team asked them to produce their guns, ammunition and other dangerous weapons.

Besides, the house to house search of illegal weapons in the area, the soliders and policemen were said to have subjected the residents to torture and harrassement while those who had with mobile phones and money were confiscated by the team.
