Oil Firms Asked to Increase Local Content From Josephine Lohor in Abuja President Olusegun Obasanjo has re-emphasised the need for oil companies operating in the country to increase the local content in the industry. The President spoke during an audience with a delegation of ExxonMobil Corporation led by its Chairman, Mr Lee Raymond, at the State House, Abuja, yesterday. He said: "We can have more local content in the oil and gas industry" despite the fact that Nigeria had a limited industrial base. He said that the development of local capacity would be more cost-effective when qualified Nigerian staff are employed, rather than employing expatriates. President Obasanjo also urged ExxonMobil to contribute to the National Power Grid by executing Independent Power Projects (IPP). Raymond had earlier in his remarks, revealed that the company's IPP would soon come on stream, adding that Exxon Mobil, being an international company, was very sensitive to issues that border on local content. Also yesterday, the President, during at an audience with the outgoing Canadian High Commissioner, Mr Howard Strauss, commended the enhan-ced relations between Nigeria and Canada.
