Tribunal Orders Fresh Election in Benue LG From Daniel Ior in Makurdi The Benue State Local Government Election Tri-bunal has nullified the chairmanship election in Makurdi local government, won by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on grounds that the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate, was unlawfully and wilfully excluded from participating in the election by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commi-ssion. The tribunal consequently ordered the Benue State Indepen-dent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) to conduct fresh election in the local government for the chairmanship position in order "to allow the electorate to elect a candidate of their choice." Mr Alphonsus Agbom, the ANPP chairmanship candidate had dragged Mr. P. N. Chagu of the ruling PDP, the BSIEC, among others to the tribunal seeking a nullification of the March 27 council polls, which had declared the PDP candidate winner. Specifically he prayed "that the election of Chagu be declared void and the BSIEC be ordered to conduct fresh election for the office of Chairman, Makurdi local government." He challenged the election of Chagu, on the grounds that the state electoral body had wrongly and wilfully disqualified him.
