Presidency Zoning, Undemocratic - Arewa Youth Forum
Lagos
By Timothy Okwu

National Secretary-General of Arewa Youth Forum, Barrister Abuka Omababa, has said the present system of zoning the presidency to geo-political zones is undemocratic and uncalled for.

Omababa, who disclosed this in a chat with THISDAY yesterday explained that based on the agenda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) power has to move to the North but he clearly stated that the issue of power shift has to be critically examined.

He reiterated that zoning the presidency would discredit our democracy, citing the example of the June 12, 1993 election, he observed that the northerns voted more for late Chief MKO Abiola because they saw him as a man who could solve their problems despite the fact that he was not from that zone.

He asserted that the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has taken it as a task to help sensitise the northern people, pointing out that the northerns needs a young man who has a credible track record, a man who is honest, sincere and ready to move the nation forward. "There are children of farmers in the north who have this good records, we don't want to fall victim to this old brigade and then continue with the old problems," he lmainataaained.

The chief scribe of the forum, who endorsed the call for a regional conference, hinted that this would give an opportunity for various regions to discuss on issues affecting them but he stressed that there is still a need for a national conference which would help in addressing burning national issues.

Omababa however called on Nigerians not to relent in their effort of sustaining our democracy, according to him, democracy has afforded Nigerians the opportunity of enjoying rich political discussion, structuring good economic policies and improved social structure.
