As the South-south governors and political leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejected the nomination of Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili's candidate to succeed slain former National Vice Chairman of the party for the zone, Chief A.K. Dikibo, a group has urged the leadership to nominate Chief Eugene Minimah as a successor.
The meeting of the South-south governors and members of National Assembly last weekend ended in a deadlock in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, following the governors' refusal to accept Odili's candidate, Chief G.U. Ake, arguing that the position has to be thrown open to other states in the zone.
But a group known as the Eastern Delta Union (EDU), in a swift reaction to the move by other governors, said in as much as the position which is of a four years tenure and presently being occupied by Rivers State has not expired, Minimah, a financier and chieftain of the party from the riverine area of the state should be allowed to step into the shoe.
Minimah, whom the group described as having impressive credentials to occupy the position, was most suitable for the job.
The group, whose leaders were of the opinion that the clamour of a riverine man from Rivers State, in the person of Minimah, was based on the fact that current tenure of Rivers State would expire by November 2005.
EDU urged other state governors to support the candidature of Minimah, while they position their turn for November 2005, when a zonal congress would take place.
THISDAY checks revealed that the group which parades eminent citizens of Rivers State as members, has as mission statement "an umbrella organisation of the people of the Eastern Delta Region of Rivers State of Nigeria, committed to fostering the unity and progress of the people and the region."
It also described Minimah "as a level-headed gentleman who weighs options before taking crucial decisions and that his being from the riverine area of the state places him in a vantage position."
