Rasak Faults Lagos Position on Federal Roads
By Ayodeji Adesina and Bisi Lawal

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain in Lagos State, Chief Lanre Rasak has expressed his support for the Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe concerning the face-off between him and Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu saying Lagos State officials have no business in federal highways.

Rasak also said that, the recent decision by the federal government not to guarantee a US$100 million loan being sought by Lagos State from the World Bank was done in good faith and aimed at to promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

Speaking with newsmen in Lagos recently, Rasak said that the deplorable federal roads for which the loan was meant have been rehabilitated by the federal government.

The minister had earlier maintained that the measure to outlaw LASTMA is in order while Tinubu said the eviction had political undertone and designed to frustrate the Alliance for Democracy (AD) controlling state government in the country.

In supporting Ogunlewe, Razak said Lagos State government has many issues at hand including bad roads and other unfulfilled campaign promises to grapple with. He also condemned what he described as "exorbitant fines and Psychiatric test" imposed on traffic offenders by LASTMA.

He said the N25,000 fine was not only punitive, but destructive, adding that the deployment of LASTMA and KAI operatives to Lagos roads was also an introduction of State Police through the back door.

On the controversial $100million loan, Razak who is also the Chairman, Lagos PDP Mobilization Committee said the original proposal sent to the World Bank by Lagos State entailed the development of the state's rail, road and water transportation scheme, stressing that part of the proposal has been overtaken by events.

Rasak suggested that the proposal be up graded to reflect the newly rehabilitated federal highways in the state.

It would be recalled that Senetor Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Seye Ogunlewe have been engaged in a war of words over the sacking of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) operatives from federal roads.
