As Saraki initiative begins

The Scrabble Federation of Nigeria (SFN) has released the names of invited players for this first of four Mini-Masters series towards choosing Nigeria's representatives for the African Scrabble Cham-pionship in October in Tanzania just as Mrs. Saraki's Development Initiative starts off in Ilorin.
President of the Federation, Engineer Toke Aka told THISDAYSports yesterday that: "The basis for qualification for the next Mini-Masters in Abuja this weekend is the current ratings after the grandmasters. Only the top 12 players are invited on merit. It is only on the condition that any of the top 12 players on the ratings below cannot make it that we shall fill in with those from 14-24 accordingly, while two wild card entries will be provided by our Abuja sponsors," said the President on phone from Port-Harcourt.
There would be 13 games played on a round robin basis and three games King of the Hill; There will be an only prize for the Mini-Master winner of N20, 000.
Meanwhile, the Scrabble Development Initiative for Secondary Schools sponsored by the Wellbeing Foundation, an NGO midwifed by wife of the Kwara State governor, Mrs. Toyin Saraki began in Ilorin yesterday.
Speaking at the event, the NGO's spokesman, Mr. Niran Adedokun said, "the initiative is a part of a grand design to affect positively, intellectually by improving the vocabulary and numeracy abilities of the students through this game."
In a related development, the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association may host the scrabble family to the annual tournament by the end of August. Sources close to the Federation told THISDAYSports that there is the possibility of incorporating the winner of the Bayelsa Open (Masters Category) winner as one of the qualifiers to the 2004 African Scrabble Cham-pionship. Towards this end, the organisers intend to shift the tournament two weeks earlier (just before the 3rd Mini-Masters scheduled for Port Harcourt on 21st and 22nd August). There is, thus, every likely possibility of Bayelsa Open coming up on the 14th and 15th of August.
