Aiico Insurance Loses Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Francis Joseph Hagerty, the American born Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Aiico Insurance Plc, one of the foremost life insurers in the country and Governing Council member of the Nigerian Insurers' Association (NIA) is dead.
According to a release from the management Aiico Insurnce Plc, Hagerty died July 2, 2004 at his hometown, Pennsylvania, United States of America (USA).
When the news filtered in last week, it was quite unbelievable that a man who actively participated in the Governing Council meeting of the NIA before the association's 2004 Annual General Meeting in Lagos and shared jokes with newsmen on June 29, 2004 is dead.
But it was later confirmed and sadly too that Mr. Francis Hagerty, an American who loved Nigeria with passion, a humourous and lively man is gone forever.
Born January 27, 1943 in the United States of America (USA), Hagerty is a 1967 Liberal Arts/Psychology graduate of the Catholic University of America and in 1969 he studied Law at the Columbus School of Law in the same university.
He worked for IBM Corp, Wilmington Delaware between 1969 and 1976 as an Internatioal Representative and International Account System Engineer respectively. He joined and was appointed Assistant Vice President, MIS and Director of Life Data Centres of American International Group (AIG) in 1980.
In AIG/America Life Insurance Company (ALICO), Wilmington he was appointed Vice-president, World-wide Administration, a position he held until 1993.
In 1993 Hagerty became Director, Strategic Planning and Development Intercontinental Marketing Systems (ICMS) and in 1998 he became a Director of Aiico Insurance Plc. In June 2001, he succeeded Mr. Hansen as the Managing Director/CEO of Aiico.
An experienced, bottom-line executive with thorough knowledge and proven ability in international insurance marketing, management information service and customer service operations, Hagerty brought his wealth of experience in insurance business to bear on Aiico evidenced by the continuous rise in the company's fortunes all through his tenure.
The management of Aiico described him as "a cheerful, humorous and dynamic corporate executive par excellence who believed in productivity as a yardstick for measuring employee welfare". He is also a firm believer in the Nigerian potentials and dreams.
The deceased is survived by his wife and only son.
