I didn’t disrupt ACF’s peace effort, says Dariye

Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye has refuted allegations by the
Deputy Chairman, board of trustees of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF),
Jeremiah Useni, that he frustrated initiatives by the forum to resolve
the conflict in the state.
Dariye, in a statement
in Jos, said as a Northerner, the progress and peaceful co-existence of
the North and Nigeria was the top most priority of his administration.
He said the initial
posture of the ACF to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-controlled
governments in the North and the manner its officials were selected from
Plateau State gave room for suspicion in their intervention in the crisis.
Dariye recalled that
while he was in office, ACF officials were warmly received during their
visits to Government House, Jos and that it is unfair for Useni to claim that the forum was
frustrated by his government.
“During the courtesy
call of ACF leadership on me I told them that all hands should be on deck
to help resolve the crisis in Plateau State”, he said.
According to him,
Useni, who is a stakeholder and a concerned Taroh elder, has every reason
to pursue peace and reconciliation with the Fulanis in Wase or Boghoms of
Kanam instead of waiting for him through the ACF platform.
His words: “Useni was a
member of both the Emir of Zazzau and Presidential Peace Committees. It is inconceivable that I
would prevent Useni from holding an ACF meeting designed for peace among
his Taroh people considering his standing in Taroh land”.
Dariye stated that
although the government has responsibility to maintain peace and
security, the ultimate desire and wish for peaceful co-existence among
citizens of any state lies in their hearts.
He stressed: “If the
people desire peace with their neighbours, they will get it, I believe
that any voluntary peace committee or effort must be driven by the
commitment/belief of its members and not by efforts of the government
alone”.
He said his resolve now
is that all the stakeholders in the state should avoid making
inflammatory statements that would further divide the people and for them
to co-operate with Sole Administrator Chris Alli so that permanent peace
could be restored.
