Crude oil thieves nabbed in Rivers
By CHRIS IKWUNZE, Port Harcourt
Friday July 16, 2004

Five crude oil thieves have been arrested by men of the Operation Fire-for-Fire of the Rivers State Police Command in charge of monitoring Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) pipe lines against illegal bunkering.

Police sources told Daily Sun that the suspects were arrested at Elele Alimini, in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, following a tip off.
Two petrol tankers with registration numbers XA 202 PHC and XA 150 AJB used by the suspects were also impounded by the police.

The suspects, whose name were given as Alexander Olifedinma, Mohammed Moreel, Muhazu Mohammed, Chidi Chris and Solomon Ogutwu were at the time of their arrest filling the tankers with crude oil from Shell Crude Oil pipelines at Elele Alimini.

According to sources, Solomon Ogutwu who is alleged to be the Co-ordinator of bunkering activities in the area had confessed that he worked for one Pricillia Nwuche, who allegedly owns the bunkering venture.
It was gathered that at the time of arrest, tanker No. YA 202 PHC was at the pipeline affixed with hoses into the tanker at one end, while at the other end, hoses were fixed into four veehead pipes, screwed to the underground pipes where crude oil was being transferred into the tanker.

Daily Sun further learnt that while the tanker was loading, another one with No. XA 150 ABJ was waiting along the road for the other one to disengage before it could load.
Police said that the suspects and the exhibits have been taken to SCID, Port Harcourt for further investigation.
When contacted, the police command maker, Mrs Ireju Barasua (ASP) confirmed the arrest.
