Shell Petroleum Development Company is working towards meeting
Nigeria’s aspiration of producing four million barrels
of crude oil per day by 2010.
As a major crude oil producer, the company says it is poised
to contribute about 50 percent to the attainment of this objective.
Speaking to Daily Sun in Uyo, the manager, Public Affairs
East of Shell Petroleum Development company Mr Bobo Brown,
said if Nigeria wants to produce four million barrels a day
his company would need to increase its production to Two millions
barrels.
"By four million barrels a day by 2010, we are really
behind many of the major producers. I am sure you know that
Iraq has the capacity for six million barrels of oil per day.
Right now they are doing about two million. That is 30 percent
of their production capacity. You would see the gap and know
that this country has a lot of catching up to do", he
said.
On his trip to Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Bobo Brown said that the
State is a major stakeholder in Shell’s business.
He said Shell’s management team would be coming to brief
the government of Akwa Ibom State on the Company’s plan
for the future tagged: ‘securing our future’.
"What are those things we are going to do to help Shell
help Nigeria to deliver our National aspirations. In addition
it means we have to modify some of the ways we do things.
"The other thing we will be sharing with the State government
is part of our work performance to make sure that our various
fields here are better taken care of in the days ahead.
"I am sure you know in Akwa Ibom State, we have a number
of fields that we are not producing now. Some of them we are
doing something, in others we are not producing. It is important
that we have a work programme that makes sure that those fields
are in good condition. We will continue to monitor them to
ensure there is no danger to the environment to human beings
and property.
"One of such fields is the one in Uruan Local Government
which has been a point of concern for the development of Akwa
Ibom State’, the manager Public Affairs said.
