Rivers orders schools staff audit
By HENRY CHUKWURAH Port Harcourt
Friday July 16, 2004

No longer at ease with its rising wage bills in the education sub-sector, the Rivers State Government has called for a staff audit of primary and post-primary schools in the state.
Governor Peter Odili gave the directive in Port Harcourt, just as he advised the people to get actively involved in the daily economic activities in the state.

Speaking at the just concluded three-day retreat for top government functionaries, the governor said the proposed staff audit would help to stem the steady rise in the number of schools staff.
He told the participants that the staff strength of primary and post-primary schools in the state had continued to rise despite deaths and retirements in the system.
He urged education managers to be alive to their responsibilities and help bring sanity into the educational system.

"You must audit your system and the starting point is the issue of staff audit."
Urging participants to see the retreat as "soul searching exercise," Governor Odili also frowned at the astronomical rise in the population of students of the state origin submitted for payment of bursary allowances yearly.

The state scholarship board, he said, has been receiving about N200 million each year, for the past five years for payment of bursaries.
He regretted that on all occasions, figures from the Board and the schools were "hardly" on agreement.
"There is a fundamental problem with the number of students submitted each year," Governor Odili said, adding of that, "those implementing the system must have the guts to do what is right at any time."
