Police recovers 85 weapons from cultists
By CHRIS IKWUNZE, Port Harcourt
Friday July 16, 2004

The raid on Amadi-Ama, a suburb of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by a combined team of army, navy and police has led to the recovery of about 85 different makes of arms from cultists operating in the area.
The River State Commissioner of Police, Mr Sylvester Araba, who spoke to newsmen on the raid gave a breakdown of the arms as 80 sophisticated rifles, three assault rifles and two barrette rifles.
He said that 74 people were arrested during the early morning raid last Tuesday by the combined team, an exercise he said would be carried out in all the other tows, believed to be habouring cultists and their godfathers.

The commissioner however denied that several persons lost their lives during the raid, saying that only minor injuries were sustained by few persons.
He said that the raid was in response to the escalating cases of cultism and cult activities which had resulted in the death of many prominent persons and destruction of properties.

Following the passage of the Anti-Cult Law, government had appealed to all the cultists to renounce their membership if the monester, turn-over their weapons and at rewarded, but they refuse to heed the clarion call, so something had to be done, the police boss said.

He said that the war would be carried to the door-step of the cultists and their sponsors until the entire state was rid of the menace.
It would be recalled that Governor Peter Odili had last week during a retreat for top government functionaries told the head of the security units in the state to flush all cultists in the state or be prepared to be re-deployed out of Rivers State.
