Nigeria seeks Britain's help on crime detection

WORRIED by the unresolved high profile killings in the country, the Federal Government has formally asked the British government to come to its aid.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Broderick Bozimo made the appeal yesterday in Abuja just as the British government expressed concern over its people and their investments in the Niger Delta region.

Bozimo, made the appeal when the new British High Commissioner, Gozney Richard, paid him a courtesy call in his office.

"You way have read in the papers that we are handicapped in our investigation of crimes because of forensic structures that are not properly in place.

"We would like to appeal that the British Government, acting with our government, should look at our forensic structures for us. We don't expect that it should be done free but at least, we must concede that the expertise is with you and we are truly anxious that this administration of Mr President leaves behind a forensic regime or system which will outlast all of us. We really have an ambition to try to set up a laboratory," he said.

Responding, Richard said the British government was very much interested in the effectiveness of the police in a democratic system.

He said the real confidence anybody could have in any democracy could be measured through the effectiveness of the police.

Richard, however, noted that the British government can not impose any form of policing on any country, saying that it is left for each country to fashion its own form of police.

"We offer no prescription. We offer no model. Every country will find its own pattern of policing."`
