Local council funds controversy

SIR: Constitutional Right Project (CRP) condemns the on-going face-off between the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government over the non-release of funds as a result of the creation of new local governments in the state.

CRP maintains that while it is the duty of the state to create new local government areas as clearly stipulated in the constitution, the questions that arises are: were the guidelines in the constitution strictly adhered to by the Lagos State Government

  • Was a proper referendum conducted with the approval of at least two-thirds majority of the people of the said local government areas

  • Does the state need the input(s) of the National Assembly in the creation of new local government areas as claimed by the Federal Government in an affidavit sworn to by Mr. Bodunde Adeyanju, a Special Assistant to the President
  • CRP hereby calls on the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government to stop the political power tussle at the expense of the ordinary workers and pensioners. Thus, both parties should resolve the dispute amicably and speedily as advised by the court in order not to aggravate the already worsened plight of teachers and pensioners in the state.

CRP would want to use this opportunity to also condemn in strong terms the 'show of shame' exhibited in the recent scuffle between the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Air Force.

If law enforcement agents that are supposed to protect lives and property now turn the armed forces into a David and Goliath war, what then would be the fate of its citizenry.

CRP hereby calls on the Federal Government panel that was recently set up to look into the cause of the fracas to do its work without fear or favour and ensure that appropriate sanctions are taken against culprits in order to forestall a recurrence of such shameful act.

    Yinka Lawal,

    Executive Director,

    Constitutional Rights Project,

    Lagos
