Helping the unemployed

SIR: "Work keeps us from three great evils: boredom, vice and poverty", so says Voltaire. It is heart-rending for parents and guardians to watch their unemployed children and wards engage in one vie or the other under the guise of making ends meet. So many graduates roam the streets in search of non-existent jobs.

Owing to the vulnerability of the situation, elitist seminars with outrageous fees purportedly aimed at empowering and sensitising the unemployed become self-reliant advertised in the dailies are on the increase. The most intriguing aspect of the whole things is the price tag on these seminars, some eve go as high as N10,000 and above keeping one guessing whose interest is being protected. How would a person who has been reduced to nothing by unemployment finance himself if he is interested

  • The conveners of these seminars should consider their target group, go back to the drawing board and fashion out ways and means of alleviating the suffering and hardship these people have been used to. While not trying to sound so puritan, it is absolutely necessary to bait the hook to suit the fish. A reduction in the fees would go a long way in attracting the "real" unemployed graduates and youths in the society. By so doing, they would know that they are not alone after all.
