Commissioner Suggests Solution to Housing Problem From Efem Nkanga in Uyo Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Iroigak Ikann, has said the country needs about 500,000 units of houses to be constructed annually at a conservative cost of N500,000.00 per unit , if Nigeria is to sustain its housing delivery programme. Ikann made this declaration in Uyo when he declared open the 18th National conference of Chief Architects of the Federation. He reiterated that solution to sustain housing delivery is targetted at low income earners and disregard the elites desire to create architectural wonders. He said the sustainability of the country's housing delivery is a monumental challenge for both government and professional groups in the housing sector. Ikann called on the conference to examine the root cause of the housing problems, especially the role of rural poverty and rural urban migration and its attendant negative impact on housing as well as recommend policies that can reverse the direction of human traffic. He also called on participants to seek ways of improving land acquisition for sale to the public as a way of encouraging the public to construct houses via reduced land cost. He stressed that the establishment of a Bank that will address the long term needs of the sector with a view to helping individuals acquire their own houses at reduced cost is a desirable option at this time.
