Kano Approves New Education Policy From Yakubu Musa in Kano Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has approved a new education policy, which seeks to support both Quranic and secular schools with a view to tackling the problems of street begging. Special Adviser to the governor on Education and Information Technology (IT), Dr Bashir Galadanci, who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday, said the policy would see the introduction of a Sudanese model of "quranic model primary schools," which combine memorisation of Holy Quran and secular subjects. According to him, the system works so well in Sudan as researches show that the memorisation of the Holy book strengthens the aspect of grasping the other subjects." He said government would commence the conversion of primary schools into the model by selecting some few to make them quranic model school, explaining that non-muslims would not be compelled to learn quran. Galadanci lamented the neglect of the quranic education system in the state by successive government, which he said had given zero support to the system. He, pointed out that the programme would require a lot of money and commitment to succeed. He said government would soon commence building structures for the schools while other assistance would also be given to the system the system has over one million students, with more than 24,000 schools.
