Niger Delta Vigilante Leader Turns in Armoury
From Donald Andoor and Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt

Dreaded leader of Niger Delta Vigilante Group, Mr. Ateke Tom, yesterday voluntarily surendered his armoury to the Rivers State Government in compliance with the directives of govenment that all those in possession of illegal firearms should surrender them and in turn be granted amnesty.

The armoury surendered to the Chairman of Okrika Local government Council, Mr. Idiba Walter comprises 37 guns, 20 dynamites, 188 live ammunitizer, 155 catridges, one matchet and one mystic stick which the owner claims makes him invisible to his opponents and also serves as bullet proof.

Tom, the most dreaded gang leader with his group was in control of the riverline areas of Okrika axis. His group was in routine bloody clashes with the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force led by Alhaji Asari

Dokubo which often leaves in its trail a lot of casualties.

In a brief remark at the presentation ceremony which took place at his home in Okrika before he diasappeared to an unkwown place for his safety, he appealed to those who were still in possession of illegal arms to surrender them for the peace and development of the state.

The surrender of the armoury by one of the most dreaded cult leaders is coming of the heels of a similar one surendered by another "warlord" last wednesday but whose identity was not disclosed.

The warlord had surendered 130 guns made up of 122 AK Assault rifles and eight Sub Machine Guns (SMG) whose market value was given as N500,000 and N820,000 each over the counter. The SMGs were of army green colours with army numbers.

The voluntary submission of the armoury by the Okrika warlord has brought to 187 firearms voluntarily turned in by 112 persons who were in possession of illegal firearms apart from those being recovered by the state Joint Patrol team on the recovery of illegal arms.
