Community Policing Takes Off From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Novel concept of community policing yesterday became a reality in Nigeria as it formally took off in Enugu State with the Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun saying that it would bring a new dawn of warm relationship between the police and members of the public. Balogun said that when fully implemented the project would solve most of the problems including the negative stereotypes associated with policing and law enforcement in the country. He described community policing as "an attempt to bring policing to your doorsteps", adding that he expected everybody to "jump at it." Although the project is a novelty in Nigeria with Enugu as "the pilot of the pilot states" the IG explained that community policing has become an international model of policing that has worked effectively in such nations as United Kingdom, United States, France and Germany. "Therefore it was rationally concluded that Nigeria would not be an exception," he said. As part of the grand designs and mechanisms built into the implementation of the project, Balogun said that human rights desks have been established in all police stations in Enugu State to treat cases of human rights abuses. Nigeria's number one policeman assured the enthusiastic audience that community policing was a worthwhile project in this democratic dispensation, saying that when fully implemented the Nigerian police would even go beyond its main function of law enforcement to engage in social services.
