Court Seeks Taylor's Asylum Documents By Ndubuisi Ugah Judge of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Justice Steven R. Ada, has issued a subpoena requiring the Nigerian Refugee Commission (NRF)to produce all documents relating to former Liberian President Charles Taylor's asylum application in Nigeria. The order was issued in response to a request by a coalition including the Open Society Justice Initiative. THISDAY gathered that the request covers all legal advise issued to President Olusegun Obasanjo on Taylor's application for refugee status and the actual application itself, if it exists. Justice Ada also ruled that the legal requirements for serving notice on Taylor would be fulfilled by a simple note in the two main national newspapers, The Guardian and ThisDay. He said this ruling would facilitate the continuation of the case by plaintiffs, Messrs Emmanuel Egbuna and David Anyaele, by ensuring that costs are not prohibitive. However, Zeinab Bangura, founder of the Sierra Leonean Campaign for Good Governance, who attended the hearing said: "Until Taylor is brought to the Special Court, the Court will lack credibility and Liberia's own peace process will stall. Liberians will never believe he's not coming back as long as he still has a mobile phone and an email address." It would be recalled that the case challenging the legality of Taylor's refugee status in Nigeria was brought by Anyaele and Egbuna, two Nigerian businessmen, who were victims of amputations carried out by Taylor-backed militia in Sierra Leone in 1999.
