Airline Operators Hike Fares By Ndubuisi Francis A new fare regime is underway as airline operators embark on a 12 per cent hike in air fare from next Monday, in what they consider a move to remain afloat in the face of mounting operational costs. Coming one year after a similar increase was effected by the same margin, the operators are now to charge N10, 000 for a one hour flight as against the subsisting fare of N9,000. Citing increasing operational costs, particularly the incessant rise in the cost of Jet-A1(otherwise known as aviation fuel), the airlines had last year increased fare from N8, 000 to N9,000. The current fare increase which is to commence on Monday, THISDAY gathered received the blessing of virtually all the domestic operators, apart from Albaka Air which has one-time Military administrator of Lagos State, Brig-Gen. Mohammed buba Marwa as the driving force. Albarka had in the past always taken a different position each time a fare increase was announced by other operators. THISDAY was informed that the airline operators, in deciding to increase air fare by 12 per cent, had reviewed their operational costs and came to the conclusion that fare increase was inevitable. Sources at the meeting which was held on Wednesday at the corporate headquarters of ADC Airlines in Opebi under the aegis of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Lagos disclosed that many operators had insisted that for them to operate meaningfully, at least an increase by N5,000 was necessary. THISDAY was informed that although all the operators were in agreement on this, an increase by that margin was discarded after weighing the implications of asking air travellers to pay N14, 000 for an hour flight in the face of the soaring cost of living. In a terse circular issued by the AON, the new fare increase was announced to operators.
