Lagos Warns Ogunlewe Over Refuse Collection By Shaka Momodu Lagos State Government has warned the Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe to desist from appointing refuse collectors for Lagos roads. In a press release made available to newsmen, the Public Relations Officer of the State Ministry of Environment, Mr Yemi Akande, said the attention of the state government has been drawn to "the nefarious activity of one Hon. S. A. Balogun who is said to be representing the Honourable Minister of Works in the appointment of a private refuse collector in Kosofe Local Government commencing from 1st August, 2004." Declaring that the Federal Government has no power to appoint P.S.P waste collector and that "the so called Noibi Environmental Service is an impostor and a fraud, hence the people of Kosofe Local Government and Lagosians in general should ignore him and disregard any similar development in the state by Federal Ministry of Works and its cohorts." The statement further declared that refuse disposal and management which includes appointment of waste collectors are is the residual responsibilities of the local and state governments. "The good people of Lagos State are therefore warned not to fall victim to the dubious prank of these Federal agents who are bent on frustrating various laudable initiatives of the state government on the environment."
