Education Should Create Jobs for Children - Fafunwa
By Idowu Sowunmi

Former Education Minister, Prof. Babs Fafunwa has advised parents in the country to support policies that would make their children job creators and not job seekers.

Fafunwa, while declaring open the new complex of the Taqwa Private Schools in Agege, Lagos said parents should encourage educational policies capable of making their children financially independent in the future.

The former Minister of Education, who introduced the 6-3-3-4 system of education, told the pupils of the school to pursue their academic works and aimed to become employers of labour not employees.

Asked by the pupils why the 6-3-3-4 system of education failed, Fafunwa stressed that lack of political will on the part of government was largely respsonsible for the failure, noting that the country would not have been in the current unemployment crises if the system had been executced successfuly.

Fafunwa, who has ealier inspected facilities put in place by the school, lauded the effort of the managemnt, saying the standards met those required for meaningful education.

He encouraged the pupils to speak their indigenous languages, adding that as minister, he campaigned for the use of mother tongue as a medium of learning, because pupils would learn better with their mother tongue.

Speaking at the occasion, Chairman, Board of Governors of the school, Mr. Lere Alimi, said the school was conceived as one that would lead in the delivery of quality education to children in the country.

As part of the events lined for the formal opening ceremony of the school, pupils of the school visited the court of Justice Wale Aberu of the Badagry High Court where they watched procceedings while they also visited some historical sites in the ancient city.
