FG Urged to Release Security Breach Suspects
Lagos

Following recent directives by military authorities that all suspects involved in the recent alleged breach of national peace be freed and released, two groups have decried government's continued detention of some of the suspects.
The groups, National Democratic Movement (NDM) and Democratic Front (DF) had in a statement issued in Lagos yesterday, urged government to facilitate speedy release of the remaining six suspects.
According to Mr Chris Nwoakobia, President NDM, "we deem it fit to inform the masses that in compliance with the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) report, Coach Fanny Amun, Chief Azubuike Ekwerekwu, Major Dagari, and 12 others have been released, while six others, are still being held.
"In our statute books, judicial pronouncements, there is no Act or edict which prescribes any offence as security breach. It is incongruent with the provisions of Chapter IV of 1999 Constitution, particularly Sect-ions 34 to 39, which provides for fundamental human rights; for the government and its agencies to keep the remaining six persons without arraignment in court as provided by the Constitution."
"Indeed, Onwuchekwa Okorie Onwuchekwa has been detained since March 15. On June 21, the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos granted him leave to enforce his fundamental human rights in suit No. FHC/C/CS/339/04 but yet, Onwuchekwa has not been released to this day", Nwaokobia alleged.
"Today, it is increasingly difficult to keep quiet while government destroys the tripod of rule of law, free press, and access to justice. We, therefore, collectively demand for the release of others still being held, or their immediate arraignment in a competent court of record. Only by strict adherence to rule of law can democracy thrive. As such, we demand prompt application of provisions of the law to matters pertaining all detainees in Nigeria," Nwoakobia said.
