From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi
A member of the National Assembly representing Bauchi South senatorial district, Senator Abubakar Maikafi has decried the decline in the quality of education in the State. He also urged elite and other elected office holders from the State to invest more in education to rescue the situation from degeneration to a major social crisis.
Maikafi spoke in Dass local government area of the state while inaugurating his pet project "Senator Abubakar Maikafi Scholarship Scheme" during which scholarship grants worth over N1.5 million were presented to 100 indigent students from the district, who are currently studying in tertiary institutions across the country.
The lawmaker, who expressed worry over the fallen standard of education in the country pointed out that any nation that neglects the education of her youth faces a bleak future because, according to him "education is a vital tool for socio-economic and political development of a country."
He lamented that the burden of education had been left for government alone, and called for a change of attitude on the private sector.
According to him, "I was motivated to assist and support the students in the area so as to enhance their academic performance as well as enhance the quality of education in the State and Country in general," lamenting that "we have left for too long the efforts of giving qualitative education in the hands of government because only very few people see the need of investment in education."
While calling on other elected office holders and elites from the area to assist the present administration in its efforts to enhance the education sector, he said that "government alone cannot fully carryout this responsibility."
The occasion, which was witnessed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Tanko Jalam; Senator Bala Adamu Kariya representing Bauchi central senatorial district; State Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Inuwa Obi and a Chieftain of the PDP, Alhaji Garuba Noma, among others, saw each student pursuing a university Degree and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses receiving N15,000 while others studying for their Ordinary National Diploma (OND), National Certificate of Education (NCE) and other equivalent certificates received N10,000 each.
