A/Ibom Computerises 31 Councils
From Efem Nkanga in Uyo

In a bid to enhance productivity and efficiency in the administration of local government councils in the state,the Akwa Ibom State government has installed a computerized data base/payroll management system in the 31 local government councils in the state.

Declaring the presentation ceremony open in Uyo, Hon Godswill Akpabio, the state commissioner for local government and chieftancy affairs, said the computerization of the 31 councils was in accordance with the vision of Governor Victor Attah to turn the state into a technologically driven one.

Akpabio declared that in five to 10 years time, the state will be a technologically driven one in all aspects.

He added that the computerization will enhance a unified payroll system for each local government area thereby eliminating the scourge of ghost workers and wastages.According to him,there was a lot of overpayment in the system in the past as a result of lack of data.

Godswill said the future of governance worldwide belonged to information technology and that the 31 councils in the state was the first step towards achiveing grassroot development. In addition to the computerization of the councils, Akpabio added that, the state government has also computerized the Ministry of Finance and the office of the Accountant General of the state.

In his remarks, Head of council of Nsit Ubium,Akparawa Dan Akpan commended Attah for blazing the trail while urging other state governments to embrace.

The head of service stated that the computerization will enhance efficiency,eliminate wastages, check incidences of fraud and double payment thereby saving the council needed funds that will be channeled into the development of the grass roots.According to him it will also enable HOCs to have easy access to statistical information necessary for planning and decision making. He said, it will provide a platform for the coincils to build future IT development an integration to enhanced governance.
