NIMN Award for Marketing Excellence Due October
By Patrick Ugeh

Encouraged by the huge success of its award last year, the committee charged with the responsibility for organising the event for this yearhas announced the NIMN Award for Marketing Excellence (N.A.M.E.)

At an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday, Chairman of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria Award Committee, Mr Uche Aligbe, said the 2004 edition of the award is billed for October 5 at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

The objectives of the award are:

  • Positioning the marketing profession among other celebrated sectors;

  • Establishing the marketing institute as the custodian and guardian of marketing excellence;

  • Enthroning excellence among marketers in the practice of the profession.

    Saying there was some uncertainty when the marketing institute established the award for excellence in 2003, Aligbe stated that they were encouraged by the unprecedented response by individual and corporate members and other practitioners to make it an annual event.

    According to him, some innovations have been introduced to make the 2004 edition of the NIMN Award for Marketing Excellence even more ennobling and more competitive.

    He said it is designed to confer higher status and respectability on recipients and their winning products or services.

    "For 2004, the award which we see as a celebration of corporate marketing excellence intends, in addition to the objective above, to give a boost to the development of marketing practice in some selected sectors of the economy," the Award committee chairman informed reporters.

    He listed sectors already identified for emphasis in this year's award as:

  • Oil and gas

  • Banking and financial services

  • Airline services

  • Communication and information technology

  • Pharmaceuticals

  • Small and Medium Scale Enterprises

  • Food and Beverages; and others.

    Awards will cover Brand of the Year, Product/Service of the Year, Sales Promotion of the Year, Advertising Campaign of the Year, and Marketing Student of the Year categories.

    "We have selected seasoned marketing professionals in the various sectors and categories under focus to act as evaluators," he announced. "There will also be a strong input from moderating and controlling bodies as well as customers in the evaluation process."

    Aligbe explained that to give greater effect to this year's award, the NIMN would organise increased media visibility starting with the development of an identity logo for the award.

    "This should accompany all our communications from now onwards," he disclosed.

    As for the benefits of the award, he said special media exposures were being arranged for all brands and activities that emerge as winners of the awards. The aim, he pointed out, was to improve the image and perception of the brands and their owners.

    "The award confers professional success and effectiveness of marketing actions on the practitioner," he assured.

    Entries for the award are expected to be returned to the organisers by September 15.
