Withheld LG funds: You betrayed me, Tinubu tells workers
By Habib Aruna
Assistant Political Editor, Lagos
Council
workers in Lagos have been accused by Governor Bola Tinubu of passing
vital documents to Abuja which undermine the case being made by the state
for the release of withheld funds.
He said they
gave key government documents to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) which in turn passed them to Federal Government leading
counsel Afe Babalola in the on-going litigation over council allocation
embargoed by the Presidency.
Speaking at a
legislative briefing organised by Ministry of Local Government for the
state’s council workers on Thursday in Lagos, Tinubu said it is now clear
that the PDP in the state is directly involved in the withholding of the
funds.
He accused the workers
of betraying the cause of the state government, saying: “There are
traitors among you and some workers. It is the PDP in Lagos State that is
fighting us. Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe and other leaders of the PDP held a
meeting with Afe Babalola where it was arranged how they would get
documents to show that we are paying council workers.
“They have the
records that showed salaries are being paid to workers. It is the PDP
that is fighting against the newly created local governments but you are
not protecting your records, there is no more secrecy. I don’t believe it
came from the elected chairmen, it came from the workers.
“That is the
problem, they are now using your own documents and records to fight you.
We still have to meet to discuss a number of things but they are not for
public consumption. We are being betrayed. They have the salaries pay
slip attached with affidavit to show that we are able to pay”.
Tinubu said it
is hard to imagine that the state PDP would join in influencing Abuja to
continue to withhold the funds. “The question is whether we will let PDP
in Lagos State get away with this. If they are fighting you for creating
new councils, then you have to work harder”.
The governor
directed council chairmen to let people at the grassroots know that the
PDP is responsible for their woes so that the people will know where to
direct their blame.
