Land allocation: 10
FCT officials under probe
By Dan Alo
Correspondent, Lagos
Officials
of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministry whose names appear in the
approval of the illegal structures are under probe.
FCT Minister
Nasir el-Rufai said they issued legal documents for the erection of some
of the buildings currently being pulled down in the on- going demolition
exercise in Abuja.
He spoke in an
interview in Lagos without stating how many of the officials are involved
in the shady deal of approving construction of buildings in unapproved
areas, altering the city’s original plan in the process.
Investigations,
however, showed that 10 officials have been pencilled down for trial.
Their names and signatures appear consistently in the approval of the
structures.
Said el-Rufai:
“We are aware that some individuals in the ministry before now had been
in the habit of helping people to acquire landed properties on unapproved
sites, but we cannot just send them away like that. Sometimes it is a
case of omission, but those that we see that have their names in this
kind of business for more than once will be probed.
“This is a
serious case, because they have made the government lose so much money.
For every building we pull down we pay compensation, and they cause heart
aches to people. Imagine the feelings of those affected in the
demolition. This issue will be treated with all the seriousness it
deserves”.
The government
plans a mortgage facility for individuals to acquire property in the new
satellite estates in Abuja and, to ensure transparency, names of those
freshly issued with certificates of occupancy (C-of-Os) and allotted
flats would be published.
The FCT Ministry
has presented before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) a proposal for
the allocation of land in Abuja. Under the new regime, provided
principles in the original master plan are adhered to, it would be
possible to have a C-of-O processed in one week.
“We will also consider the
applications for land since 1980; those that we find relevant will
immediately be allocated,” Rufai explained.
