Rise above mediocre output, Atiku tells writers

By ’Gbenga Abiodun

State House Correspondent, Abuja

Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has advised Nigerian writers of literature to look more inwards and uncover greater depth in their strive to appropriately mirror societal experiences.

He also advised the writers not to be in a hurry to go to press just for the sake of it, adding that hurriedly put together books have little artistic merit that may not evolve much social change.

The vice-president, while extolling the works of great writers like Professor Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, Femi Osofisan, Niyi Osundare and others, who have been able to rise beyond the current mediocrity of self-glorifying publishing, challenged upcoming writers to emulate and step into the shoes of these passing generation of writers.

Abubakar, who said he was an avid reader of children’s literature, in a letter to the President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Prof. Olu Obafemi, disclosed his decision to donate an additional N1 million to the ANA/Atiku Abubakar Children Literature Prize, thereby bringing the endowment to the prize to N1.5 million.
