‘Police salary
scale not for public scrutiny’

Against the
backdrop of outcry by the police rank and file that the remuneration
standard in the police was substandard compared with what obtained in the
civil service and other armed organisations, the Police Public Relations
Officer, Zone Two, Mr. Monday Agbonika, has described as strictly
confidential the salary scale of the Nigerian Police.
Agbonika, a Superintendent of Police, told Daily
Independent that what one policeman earns in relation to his
colleague in that same rank are contradictions that would be resolved
internally.
“ I am sorry, how much one
category of officers earn in relation to others is a very confidential
issue. It is not for public scrutiny. Every policeman knows how much he
negotiated when he joined the force and what increment he received
thereafter,” he said.
He added that the police
salary scale has not changed in recent times to warrant any curiosity.
Agbonika refuted report that
policemen were already receiving the 13 per cent increment in salary
promised public servants by the Federal Government and being implemented
in ministries and parastatal.
The Zone Two spokesman’s
position on the increment created doubts about the veracity of the claim
by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Israel Ajao, that his command
has started paying the salary increase, last month.
On growing discontent amongst
the other ranks over dismal pay, Agbonika retorted that it was not in
line with human nature to be contented.
“ How much did they negotiate
when they were coming into the police? Did they not know that the pay is
unattractive? I am surprised that despite the cry over poor pay, so many
Nigerians rush to enlist in the police. Go to the police college and see
people begging to be recruited,” he said.
Agbonika added that going by
the dangers to personal safety involved in community policing, it was not
surprising that policemen were always craving for increase in salary.
“ No amount is too big as
salary for a police man,” he said.
