‘No division in South East Governors’ Forum’
By chukwudi achife,
bureau chief Enugu
The Enugu State Government has
declared that the Conference of South East Governors is not factionalised
or disintegrated as is being insinuated in some quarters.
The Commissioner for
Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Ayogu Eze, told journalists in
Enugu on Thursday that the meeting of the conference of governors held
recently was not boycotted by three governors as was reported by the
media.
He explained that two
governors, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu) Chief Achike Udenwa (Imo) were
present while Dr. Sam Egwu (Ebonyi) who was indisposed sent the Secretary
to the Government, Professor Ozo Nweke Ozo, since the deputy governor was
on vacation.
He added that Anambra State
governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, was represented by his deputy, while Abia
State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, was away on vacation.
Eze said the governors’ forum
is intact and advised journalists to always check their facts before
going to press, adding that the decision to move the meetings round the
states was informed by a desire by the governors to exchange visits with
one another.
“Enugu is the capital of not
just the South-East but the entire Eastern Nigeria. All the governors
have a place or two where they can stay in Enugu. Apart from this, they
have brothers and sisters here. We are completely interwoven. The idea of
sense of belonging does not arise at all,” the commissioner said.
He explained that the absence
of the governors at the last meeting was a mere coincidence, describing
as ridiculous the insinuation that their absence had something to do with
the vice presidential ambition of some of the governors.
“The governors set the agenda
for this clamour for a president of Igbo extraction? I do not think any
of the governors wants to be a vice president. I am not even sure if any
of them wants to be president. But I know that they are strongly behind
the push for Igbo presidency. I do not even think they have personal
ambitions at that level. That speculation is wide off the mark,” Eze
noted.
He said the South East is
ready to work together for the benefit of the people of the zone, adding
that “never before had the South East been so closely knit and united
behind a project as they are today.
