Speaker tasks corporate bodies on community
development
By Uche Nwosu,
special correspondent, Umuahia
Corporate
organisations in the country have been charged to plough back 25 per cent
of their profits to the development of their host community in order to
maintain a cordial relationship with them.
At the eastern zone of the
national draw of Dunlop Plc tagged Joyrids to the Olympics promotion held
on Wednesday at Aba, Abia State, the Speaker of the state House of
Assembly, Mr. Stanley Ohajunika, explained that if this is done, the
constant friction between corporate organisations and their host
communities will be reduced if not eliminated.
He said the people whose lands
were used to make the profits should be part of the success story,
stressing that, “If you leave them in the lurch while you smile to the
banks, there is bound to be friction that may lead to civil disturbance.”
Ohajunika urged companies to
act responsibly by paying their taxes and rates regularly, saying they
should always be partners in progress in the development of their host
states.
The Managing Director of
Dunlop, Mr. J.A. Lawuyi, said the company is embarking on another major
expansion programmes called all steel radial truck (ASRT) that
“represents the future of truck tyre”, noting that this would come on
stream next year.
Represented by the Human
Capital Director, Dr. Olawale Ajai, the managing director said the
objectives of “our take-a-trip promotion are to reward loyal customers
and also uniquely encourage family participation (where winner and
spouse) go on a trip.
According to him, the aim of
the company in sponsoring the trip is not only to send four couples (one
each from the four regions) on a trip abroad but to ensure it is a
memorable one, with the 2004 edition of the Olympic returning to the
cradle, Athens.
At the raffle draw ticket
number 15360 won the trip to the Olympics in Athens, Greece.
The winner will join other
Nigerians to the Olympics this summer courtesy of the Dunlop’s Olympics
promotion.
About 10 other persons from
Warri, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Uyo and Calabar won consolation prizes.
