Courier operators raise alarm over multiple charges

By Emma Okonji

IT. Telecom Reporter, Lagos

The Association of Nigerian Courier Operators (ANCO) has described as exorbitant the multiple charges imposed on courier operators by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The charges, which range  from registration fees and renewal of registration fees to payment of airport levy for each kilogramme of goods, have been described as not only exorbitant, but also multiple, unjust and unacceptable.

ANCO National President, Mr. Obiora Okeke, and his executives, who lamented the high charges at a press conference in Lagos, said they are sick of the charges, noting that the charges are affecting the smooth growth of the industry.

According to Okeke, the charges amount to double taxation since courier operators still pay charges to the National Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skypower Aviation Handling Company Limited (SAHCOL) that are agencies to FAAN.

FAAN’s recent last reminder notice to the courier operators, warning that with effect from July 1, this year, courier companies without proof of registration and renewal permit would not be allowed to operate in the terminal, no doubt made ANCO to make the matter a food for public thought.

According to the warning letter, dated June 22 and signed by Mr. U.P. Nevo, all courier operators must buy FAAN stickers and register their companies for this year.

Condemning the exorbitant charges, the courier operators made it clear that they are not directly making use of FAAN facilities and should therefore not be subjected to FAAN’s charges. They explained that the charges would amount to multiplicity of taxes.
