Ogunlewe threatens to revoke road contract in Imo

COSMAS EKPONUBO, Abuja

THE federal government may revoke the contract for the Ihiala-Nkwere Anara road as the Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogonlewe summoned the contractor, MCC over unfavourable report by a House of Representatives panel.

The said report of the House committee on works was however re enforced by a strong worded petition by the deputy chairman House Committee on Agric, Hon Chidi Nwogu.

Hon Nwogu who was on the tour of the House Committee on Works to road projects in the South-East had in the said letter to the Minister of Works lamented the delay in the completion of the said road for which N700 million was voted for this year alone.

Also summoned Thursdays was a federal controller for works, Imo State and a member of the House Committee on works.

The Minister was said to have threatened to revoke the contract and reaward it to a more competent contractor if the MCC, a construction giant in the old eastern region does not move in a determine manner to complete the job.

He had however directed the contractor to move to site or face sanctions.

Hon. Nwogu who represent Nkwere, Nwagele, Isu, Njaba Federal Constituency of Imo State in a statement yesterday however advised his constituents to exercise patience while urging the minister to prevail on MCC to speed the job.

According to him, the minister had confirmed that government does owe the contractor for work already completed and certificate presented.

Hon Nwogu said 60 per cent of the N700 million approved for the road project this year has been paid to the ministry for onward payment of the contractor.
