A man who was hit by stray bullet allegedly fired by a trigger-happy
police constable is still thanking God for sparing his life.
Victor Ofuasia, who spoke after a thanksgiving ceremony in
his compound said, "I am talking now by His grace. God
spared my life from a trigger-happy police constable who vowed
that I must not see my baby but God decided otherwise."
According to Ofuasia, he was on his way to his office and
boarded a commercial bus at the Ikeja bus stop, when suddenly,
a team of policemen who felt that the bus was not picking
passengers directly from the bus stop started chasing the
motor.
Ofuasia said that within a twinkle of an eye, a police corporal
opened fire on the bus and the bullet hit him on his right
thigh.
Ofuasia who was full of praises to God said: "I just
heard gboom, and the next thing I saw was blood oozing out
of my body and the passengers, who were full of fear started
shouting ‘Jesus’ ‘Jesus,’ thinking
that the policeman would fire again."
He said that the corporal, who he gave his name, as Isaiah
would have fired more shots but for his colleagues who disarmed
him, adding: "The driver and the conductor ran away leaving
the passengers to their fate."
He said that he managed to limp with blood dripping out of
his aching thigh to where the policemen were. And he was rushed
to the hospital.
Ofuasia, who said that he was expecting a baby wondered what
would have become of his newly married wife and that of the
unborn baby adding; "I thank God that he spared my life.
I have not enjoyed my marriage and this man who is paid, with
our tax, to protect us wanted to send me to an early grave."
Victor said he wondered what would happen thereafter: "The
X-ray showed that there is a bullet inside my body. What do
the police want me to do? Right now I am one legged and I
can’t go for my business anymore."
He said that what surprised him most was that the trigger
happy policemen should open fire at about 1pm in a busy place
like Ikeja adding, "What would have happened if it was
at night? This man would have finished the whole passengers."
He said that information at his disposal show that the policeman
had engaged in such indiscriminate shooting before. "One
of his colleagues told me that he has faced an orderly room
trial before this my case. I wonder why he wanted to kill
me."
Ofuasia wants the State commissioner of police to wade into
the issue and see that the policeman is brought to book.
